Jamboree 2010

The King is dead long live the King is the expression that springs to mind where the organisation of the Jamboree is concerned. No sooner has the last visitor left the site on the Bank Holiday Monday we begin thinking about the following years’ event.

Should we change anything, tighten up on security, have the same traders, caterers and entertainers next year or ring the changes and use unknown quantities? For sure I would not like to be the person responsible for telling next year’s visitors that we had not booked the Belfast Busker, and that he was not with us. That would start a riot I reckon!

Was the DJ up to scratch? This year we changed our DJ, and he was astoundingly good so expect to see him again in 2011, he really engaged with everyone and played what everyone wanted and worked with the Crew and our live Bands to make sure your entertainment went smoothly.

We also used a different source for our staging and PA this year and Joel came up trumps providing just what we needed. We are aware that the PA was not used to the fullest extent to announce items as they came up on the schedule, apologies for that, but you need a person free to make the announcements and that was not always the case.

I think our catering arrangements provided visitors with a wide range of tasty options, and I was not aware that any of the caterers charging starship prices that we tend to experience when visiting the like of the Volksworld Show or RTTS. Fair pricing and good quality are all we can hope for. special thanks to Elaine for staying on Monday morning to feed the stragglers and Crew, appreciated.

A couple of extra ‘funfair’ styled attractions were engaged at the last minute being the Zorb Balls and Bungee Trampolines. Not sure how popular they proved but found an amusing video on YouTube. I wonder if he expected to be run over like that?

Amusing nonetheless.

At the 11th hour, we became aware that our normal bouncy castle provider had, to all intents, disappeared. Having been with us for more years than I can remember he was not ‘booked’ each year but attended on a standing order basis and featured our show on his own website/s. Became aware his websites had been taken down and when he was not at the Mt Edgecumbe show alarm bells began to ring. Anyway, we arranged a replacement, and they came up trumps. Excellent entertainment and thankfully our suggestion of a daily ticket cost was accepted to give you a chance to budget, and it proved the best way forward. They will, we hope, be back with us in 2011.

Taking heed of comments made last year when Adults and Children were forced to share entertainment space and ‘adult swearing’ was experienced by some children, this year we provided a separate children’s mini marquee and this worked well we feel.

From this year’s reactions expect to see Mr. Wacky, Richard Ready and Busy Bodies again in 2011 to keep your youngsters amused as they always perform well and get a good laugh from the kids.

It seems very likely a new Bar will be engaged for 2011 but rest assured; there will be a good one arranged with a full range of drinks.

One thing we do need to do next year is to more rigorously enforce the ‘no glass bottles/glasses’ in the marquee rule. There is a very valid reason for this as in a past year a young lady badly cut a foot on a broken glass as the glass entered her sandals, and of course she put her weight onto it causing pain and a deep cut.

Traders continue to support our event, but it is becoming difficult to secure attendance from any of the larger emporiums due to the distance to travel and the need to pay their staff at holiday rates too. Our trade Secretary will work towards getting as many along as we can in 2011.

A few years ago we abandoned having St Johns Ambulance in attendance and instead decided to spend approaching £3,000 to have a full Paramedic service in attendance. This year they had numerous wasp stings to deal with, some in very young children who, until then, had not realised how sensible it was to check the ice cream before licking it. I believe there was a boil to deal with and other sundry health problems. Charly was very good in dealing with a young girl who we believed had managed to break her wrist at around midnight on Sunday. Charly kept things happy until the local Ambulance came along. Unfortunately, we did not receive a report on her condition the following morning.

Roger and his team from GSD Security dealt with a few ‘idiots’ over the night time period. We don’t really want flares & bird scarers setting off or indeed fire extinguishers being fully discharged.
1. It costs us money.
2. It puts others in danger should they really need an extinguisher!
3. We do not want to upset the people living around the site.

Other than that a very successful event with plenty of positive feedbacg. glad to know we managed
to get things right.
